To fully meet the NPS commitment to science-based management, the Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program of the Intermountain Region organized and hosted two workshops focused on improving the integration of research and monitoring information with natural resource management in parks. The first workshop, held in Rio Rico, Arizona, in December 2005, brought together park superintendents, resource program managers, and I&M staff and scientists to address the needs and expectations of managers for science-based decision-making. A second I&M workshop, that broadened the existing audience to include additional stakeholders, was held at Chico Hot Springs, Montana, in September 2006. Two additional sessions on this topic were held at the 2007 meeting of George Wright Society in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The ideas generated from these workshops were synthesized in a volume of the George Wright Forum.
