Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located in the Guadalupe Mountains of the Chihuahuan Desert but contains several elements of Sierra Madrean, Rocky Mountain, and Great Plains affinity, and is characterized by its steep limestone canyons. The park is primarily a variety of grassland and desert shrubland habitats, though there are scattered woodlands in the higher elevations. The park supports a highly diverse ecosystem—including many plants and animals that are at the edges of their geographic range. There are more than 300 known caves in the Chihuahuan Desert in the United States, and more than 110 are present in the park.
