Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument
This Monument features Alibates flint, a beautiful multi-colored stone that was used by ancient civilizations to make weapons and tools. The only exposed source of Alibates flint is found in and around the monument. The 736 largely unexcavated quarry pits located within the park reflect a history of continuous excavation and use. Due to its unique colors and its ability to be chipped into sharp cutting edges, Alibates flint was highly prized and traded extensively throughout much of North America. Its use dates from 13,000 years ago to about 1870.
